I still remember one of our first client meetings. Someone sat across from us genuinely confused about what they had, what it meant, and whether any of it was even right for them. The products had been sold to them, not explained. The jargon was thick, the clarity was zero.

That moment set the tone for everything we’ve done since. Our job isn’t just to give advice – it’s to make the complex simple. To help people actually understand what they’re doing with their money and why, so they can make decisions with real confidence instead of just taking someone’s word for it.

Many years later, that’s still what drives us. Sprout is a small team on purpose – because real financial advice is personal, and personal doesn’t scale forever. You work with your actual adviser. They know your name, your family, your goals. And they’re with you for the long run.

I’ve been in financial services for over 19 years. What still gets me out of bed every day is the moment a client gets clarity. When something that felt overwhelming becomes a plan they actually understand and feel good about.

Before this I worked in hospitality and qualified as a scuba instructor. Both taught me that trust and staying calm under pressure matter just as much as knowing your stuff. I listen properly, ask the right questions, and tell you what I actually think.

I qualify at Top of the Table MDRT level. I speak at international conferences, lead within the global MDRT community, and bring that back to every client I work with in New Zealand.

Outside work: Formula 1, travel, good food. Ideally all at once.

Rick has decades of experience building financial advice businesses and leading high-performing teams. Before financial services, he spent ten years with elite automotive brands – Lotus, Audi, Ferrari – and once held a New Zealand land speed record for exactly one day.

Rick is an MDRT member committed to raising the standard of advice across the profession. He and Mat have built businesses and led teams together for years. The partnership at Sprout is exactly what it looks like.

Outside work: tramping Ruapehu, following the All Blacks, and straight conversations that actually go somewhere.

Lachlan Griffiths

Originally from Palmerston North, Lachlan has built his career around High Performance- as a former professional water polo player, high performance coach, and through his experience working in professional football at the Wellington Phoenix. He understands discipline, pressure, and mindset required to perform at an elite level.
 
That background naturally led him into financial services, where he is passionate about helping Kiwis make smarter financial decisions. He has a particular focus on supporting sports professionals both during their careers and as they transition beyond sport. 
 
Lachlan is driven by a desire to simplify complex financial concepts and provide clear, practical advice that makes a real difference. His approach is grounded in education, trust, and long-term relationships. 
 
Now part of the team at Sprout Financial Services he is excited to learn off Mat and Rick and provide help clients build confidence in their financial future.
